About the Commission on Faith and Witness

The Commission on Faith and Witness of the Canadian Council of Churches engages the churches in theological reflection to foster greater understanding of the faith we hold in common and to provide an ecumenical witness to Christ’s mission in the world. The Commission provides a meeting-place, a lively and fertile ground for reflection and work, among Christians of different families. Together we work to reflect theologically on matters of concern among the member churches of the Council.

We seek to articulate the Christian faith in today’s world and to discover greater mutual understanding and witness among the various expressions of the Christian faith in Canada. By probing deeply into specific theological questions, we seek to draw out points of communality and unity, while at the same time recognizing areas in which our traditions diverge. We share resources for dialogue and common understanding. And, we reflect theologically on the role and direction of ecumenism in our own day, in the specific Canadian situation in which we live and work.

In addition to focussing on specific theological topics, the Commission has specific responsibilities within the Council and acts as the link to the Council for a number of bodies and activities which often involve the participation of other Christian institutions and of member churches of the Council acting in their individual capacity.

Each member of the Council is invited to nominate one to three representatives to the Commission. In consultation with the Governing Board, the Commission decides the topics that we wish to address, in keeping with the needs and concerns of the churches.
